Cafeteria Balance Scam Calls

Dear MPUSD Families,

It has come to our attention that some of you may have received a phone call from someone claiming to represent the District's cafeteria program. Their message states that you owe money to your school's cafeteria and to immediately pay by credit card or check.  This request is not coming from the School District. These calls are a scam.  We are requesting you ignore the call. This has been reported to the Marina Police.

Estimado MPUSD familias,

MPUSD Welcomes Dr. Bill Brand, Interim Superintendent

                  For Immediate Release
April 4, 2014

Monterey, CA - Dr. Bill Brand has returned to Monterey County as Interim Superintendent for Monterey Peninsula Unified School District (MPUSD). Brand was last in the county as Interim Superintendent, then Superintendent of King City Union School District from 2010 to 2012.

Upon beginning his work locally, Dr. Brand said, “I am honored to have this opportunity to serve the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District.” He states he is looking forward to “being involved in the outstanding programs in the District, where academic achievement is the top priority.”

Earlier in his career, Dr. Brand was Superintendent of Santa Paula Union High School District from 1996-2003. Since then he has seen duty as interim superintendent in San Luis Coastal, McFarland, Lucia Mar and King City. He also has university teaching experience with Chapman University.

Dr. Brand is especially proud that Santa Lucia School, King City Union School District, exited the state’s list of underperforming schools while he was King City Interim Superintendent in 2011. “Santa Lucia school was an example of a site where powerful teaching was encouraged and student achievement flourished and the end result was academic achievement for students.”

Dr. Bill Brand has been recognized as regional Superintendent of the Year on four separate occasions and has held numerous professional association leadership positions. He is active in the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) where he led accreditation teams here and in Thailand.

MPUSD is currently involved in a national search for a permanent superintendent. It is expected that a selection will be made in the next few weeks. The starting date for the new superintendent is projected for July 2014.

The vacancy was created when Dr. Marilyn Shepherd took a leave of absence and retired in 2012. Former Associate Superintendent Leslie Codianne was selected as interim superintendent from January 2013 until her retirement at the end of March of this year.

Dr. Bill Brand will be formally introduced at the next regular meeting of the MPUSD Board of Trustees on April 8, 2014, at 7:00 pm. The meeting will be held at the District’s Instructional Materials Center, 540 Canyon Del Rey Boulevard, Del Rey Oaks. The public is encouraged to attend.
