Renee Corbishley and Joyce Morrison

We're better together: Renee Corbishley and Joyce Morrison

Four years ago, Renee Corbishley (then Monterey High School’s principal’s secretary) saw something special in parent Joyce Morrison when she came in as a volunteer to answer phones and serve the front office of Monterey High School. Fast forward four years and the “dynamic duo,” as Principal Marcie Plummer calls them, can complete each other’s sentences.
Renee came to MPUSD 12 years ago, first as an attendance clerk at Bay View Academy before transferring to Monterey High as a digital media specialist. Within five years she quickly became the principal's secretary and is now the school office supervisor. She found her passion early on when she took an 8th grade typing class and went onto take high school ROP courses in office occupations. "I don't do secretarial work because I can't do something else. I chose it because I like to help people. I evaluate my success by how much I can help other people do their job," says Corbishley.
Similarly, Joyce, who now serves as secretary to the principal says, "This job has my name all over it. I didn't know it until I came here four years ago, but this job was made for me. I like to make a difference with students - if I can put a smile on a student's face, it is worth it." Today Joyce says she gives everyone that walks through the door her 110% attention and makes them feel like the most important person in the room!
They are better together at Monterey High School. "Joyce and I are a great example. Her strengths are different than mine. It's not a competition. We just support eacher other. We can look at one other and just know what to do," says Corbishley.
Both colleagues agree that they "have a really great team at Monterey High School" and know it goes beyond the school site. The role of school office support is demanding and it could not be done without the support of other departments, such as Business Services, Human Resources, Facilities, the Print Shop and more. "The folks we work with are compassionate, supportive and just amazing," says Corbishley.
Even Principal Plummer says, "They keep us in shape. Thy take charge and everyone knows where they need to be."
The next time you happen upon Monterey High School, be sure to pop your head into the office to check out the team work in action. #mpusdway
