Learn something new every day: Carmen Gonzalez
"Can do attitude." "Digs right in." These qualities sum up Carmen Gonzalez and her willingness to dive feet first this summer to take on and process the district's student transfers. Carmen joined the MPUSD family in 2004 as a substitute at the Cabrillo Family Center, and two years later became secretary for the Marina Del Mar Child Development Center. In 2007, she joined the Student Support Services team as program secretary before finding her niche as executive secretary for Facilities, where she supports the Associate Superintendent of Business Services. She coordinates purchase orders, handles facilities permit requests, staffs the Citizen (Bond) Oversight Committee, and more.
These days, her role requires her to provide customer service with a smile. Recent staffing changes gave Carmen the opportunity to learn something new. As many MPUSD families geared up to start the new school year, Carmen sometimes had a line out the door of parents and students wanting to move from one school to another within the district or to and from outside the district. Many times the requests were simple; whereas other times, they were more complex requiring Carmen to go the extra mile. The more challenging the transfer request, the more determined she was to work on behalf of a student to ensure he/she was placed in a setting conducive to a child's academic success.
