  • The "Un" Fairgrounds
    by
    Michael Groberg
    Grade 4

I decided to go on an adventure! There was a carnival at the state fairgrounds so we went. I was totally excited until I saw the signs that ruined my enjoyment. The Ferris wheel had a sign that said all riders had to be asleep or unconscious before riding. The gigantic roller coaster, my favorite, had a sign that said only blind people were allowed. There was a humongous merry-go-round with tons of different animals. The sign said, "Only nauseated riders permitted." The bumper cars looked like they had never been driven. That didn't surprise me because the sign said, "This ride is open for 10 seconds on Tuesday afternoons at 2:30 p.m." I couldn't believe it!

I felt a breeze. It blew the aroma of the food court past my nose. I decided to get a hot dog, but I couldn't. The sign said, "No money allowed in the food court." What a waste of time! As I was leaving, an employee tapped me on the shoulder and said, "No kids allowed." I told him how dumb the place was. "Oh," he said. "I think you are looking for the fairgrounds. These are the Un-fairgrounds!"

  • Response to Literature for the book, Hatchet, chapers 1-5
by Nathan in Mrs. Utegaard's class!

The book we're reading in class is called Hatchet. It's about a boy named Brian who crashes in a plane while heading to see his father. Brian's mother and father are divorced and Brian is sad and mad about it.

In the book, Brian is not happy with his mother and he doesn't talk to her or say good-bye to her.

While the pilot flies Brian in the plane, the pilot has a terrible heart attack and dies in the plane. I know this because in the book, Brian describes the pilot being in pain for awhile. The pilot dies while Brian is still flying the plane! I think Brian could have tried to do CPR to the pilot because he thought about it, but didn't try. Eventually, Brian lands the plane in the lake and I think he did a pretty good job because he
    survived.

When Brian is stranded in the Canadian Wilderness, he said he is really hungry. I think I was almost  as he was because one night I didn't eat dinner because I was so tired and in the morning, I was starving!

I think Brian is doing a good job surviving because he hasn't broken any bones after all he's been through. I also think he could have done a better job using the mike in the plane because he saw the pilot use it.

Congratulations to
all of the Bay View students whose  haiku were selected for publication in the
"Young American Poetry Digest"!
