Student Achievement!

We use two measures to track our school’s academic achievement over time: the Academic Performance Index (API) and Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP).

ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE INDEX (API): This is California’s way of rating schools. Using student test scores, the API places
schools on a scale from 200 to 1000.
For the 2008-2009 school year, our school’s API was 843, compared with 792 for the average elementary school.

ADEQUATE YEARLY PROGRESS (AYP): This is a federal measure that requires schools to meet test score goals schoolwide and for all subgroups of students. In 2008-2009, we met all 15 criteria for yearly progress. As a result, we succeeded in meeting our AYP goal!

  • Bay View students score above the state average in language arts, math, and science on the California Standards Tests (CST). We have consistently been one of the highest achieving elementary schools in the Monterey Peninsula Unified School District.

  • We have an exceptional relationship between our staff and our PTA.  The Bay View PTA sponsors educational enrichment activities throughout the year such as field trips and the Bay View Chorus. They also have been instrumental in attaining grants for school-grounds beautification.

  • We assess all primary students three times a year to evaluate their reading level. It is our hope to catch students who may need additional support in reading before they fall behind, as the content areas of the curriculum become increasingly more difficult.

  • We use specific test data to determine what instruction best meets the needs of our students.  Such testing includes teacher-designed assessments, district benchmark tests that give immediate feedback on student progress, and assessments within the curriculum, as well as the California Standards Tests that are given to second through sixth graders in the spring.

We make sure that our teachers have access to test data.  All English Language Learners receive English Language Development instruction to better meet their needs.
