R.O.P. Coordinator's Message

If one were to ask 100 freshman high school students and their parents how many of them think either they or their children are going to college, almost 100 % would raise their hands. Nationally, about 50 end up going to either a two year or a four year school. Of those, half wash out the first year. Of the 25 left, only half actually earn a four year degree.

In most comprehensive high schools in the nation, 90% of the focus (which is academic and higher education oriented) ends up addressing the needs of only 12% of the student population. Never in the history of comprehensive high schools has there been less of a vocational education presence that there is now, when the need is at its greatest. It is the duty of the Regional Occupational Program to maximize career and vocational offerings and to play a preeminent role on the comprehensive high school campus. In addition, we need to recapture the adult students who dropped out of the system or who are the unemployed or underemployed.

The Monterey Peninsula Unified School District's Regional Occupational Program is committed to matching opportunities with students, seeking out and filling the career voids in terms of class offerings, and to being connected with employers and industry standards. We assembled the very best people in order to make that happen.

Thank you for your interest in the R.O.P.

Respectfully,

Sharon Albert
R.O.P. Coordinator
Monterey Peninsula Unified School District
